Tai Chi

Over 300 different known martial arts styles are practiced in China today. These comprise two Chinese Martial Art systems, the external and the internal. The internal system includes such styles as Tai Chi, Xing-Yi, and Bagua styles. The emphasis is placed on breathing and stability but limited in jumps and kicks executed.

The external system includes Northern Shaolin Long Fist, Hung Gar, Wing Chun, and other styles. These emphasize breathing combined with sound, utilization of strength, speed and powerful striking and kicking. Both emphasize the cultivation and utilization of Qi (chi). To date, there are many families of Tai Chi Chuan. Five of which are most commonly practiced are Yang, Chen, Wu, Sun, and Woo styles. All Tai Chi styles find their roots in the original Chen family style.

It is believed that Tai Chi was developed by a Taoist Priest from the Wu Dang temple in China’s Wu Dang Mountains. He observed a fight between a white crane and a snake, and by mimicking their movements he created the unique martial art style, Tai Chi.

Tai Chi, initially practiced as a form of fighting, emphasizes balance, strength, speed, and flexibility. It has developed into what we know today as a soft, slow, and gentle form of exercise that can be practiced by children and adults, three to 103.

We here at 5 Elements Kung Fu have variety in our Tai Chi program, teaching both “Wu Dang Yang” and “Chen” styles along with various sets of Qi Gong to promote health and longevity. Included are weapons forms for Tai Chi sword, fan, and a variety of classes emphasizing Tai Chi as self-defense as its roots are based in the Martial Arts.
